Dr Christophe Germann

In 2000, Christophe Germann founded the niche law firm Germann Avocats after having worked in international law firms (Homburger Rechtsanwälte, Zurich, and Baker & McKenzie, San Francisco and Geneva) and in a Swiss court for six years.

In his capacity as an attorney at law, Christophe Germann is admitted to the bar of Geneva and authorized to practise both in Switzerland and in the European Union.

He acquired a solid professional experience in the areas of Swiss commercial law (contract, competition law, intellectual property protection, corporate law, merger and acquisitions, dispute resolution in courts, mediation and arbitration, private and public law (constitutional and administrative law), compliance with ECHR and international trade regulation, administrative law litigation, mutual legal assistance in criminal law matters, competition and state aid law, advice on the implementation of treaties under domestic legislation, data protection, bankruptcy, family and
succession law) with a special focus on international and transnational law aspects.

Christophe Germann holds a PhD from the Law School of the University of Berne (www.unibe.ch). His doctoral thesis focused on cultural diversity and international trade regulation (WTO agreements, UNESCO conventions and WIPO treaties) from the perspectives of intellectual property, State aid, competition, trade and culture laws and policies, with a special attention to freedom of expression. This doctoral thesis was published in January 2008 by Helbing Lichtenhahn (Basel), LGDJ (Paris) and Bruylant (Brussels).

In 2000, he obtained a Master in European Studies (“Diplôme d’Etudes Approfondies” or DEA) from the European Institute of the University of Geneva ("Global Studies"), Switzerland (www.unige.ch).

He earned his admission to the Swiss bar as attorney at law (“avocat” or “Rechtsanwalt”) in Zurich (1995).

Christophe Germann pursues research and teaching activities on public international law, European law and Swiss constitutional law with a focus on human rights, cultural and human diversity, collective security systems, dispute settlement, international criminal law and on interdisciplinary theories of international law and international relations pertaining to the promotion of peace. His domains of expertise as scholar include intellectual property law, international trade, State aid, competition law, human rights and personal data protection.

Over the last fifteen years, Christophe Germann worked in various academic positions at the Universities of Berne and Fribourg (senior lecturer), at the European University Institute of Florence (Max Weber Fellow), at the the Comparative Law Institute (UMRDC) of Paris – Sorbonne /CNRS (Chercheur étranger invité), at the MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies of Yale University, at the Lauterpacht Center for International Law of the University of Cambridge and at the law schools of Columbia University (New York), of Birkbeck University of London and of
the University of Oxford (visiting scholar and post doctoral researcher).

Christophe Germann is currently delivering a weekly pro bono lecture on international law, European law and international relations at the Université Populaire de Genève, Switzerland.
